A year ago, I remember waking up in the morning and feeling a couple of different things. The first was disappointment. I was STILL pregnant. I’d have to go through another day as my monstrous whale self. I’d have to go to church and listen to comments like “oh, you’re still here”.
And I was worried. I DID NOT want to have two of my kids sharing a birthday, and now, here we were, just two days away from Justin’s birthday and there was still no sign of this baby making his/her appearance. I really wanted Justin to be able to keep his “special day” and I had hoped to not be in the hospital having, or having just had the new baby.
But around noon that day, something changed. Right around the time church was ending, I started to have some contractions. Unlike other times, these ones didn’t just come to taunt me and then fade away. So, shortly after 7pm that night, I was holding my precious little Elijah.
And now, here I am, a whole year later. Wow! That year went by way too fast. It seems like just a couple weeks ago, he was that tiny, wrinkled newborn. Now, here he is, feeling more and more like a “big boy” every day. He’s walking everywhere now, with his adorable high-stepping walk. He’s figured out that he can climb onto things to reach things higher up and that’s his favorite thing to do now. I constantly find him standing on the laundry detergent buckets we use for storage out here. I find him standing on top of the bucket I use for soaking diapers. On top of tupperware containers he’s unpacked from the cupboard. Hanging from towel bars or trying to get up the ladder on the bunk bed. He’s a busy little guy!
Another favorite of his is balls. That boy LOVES balls. He will carry them around, throw them, try to kick them. He’s never happier than when he’s got a ball.
He’s developed a very silly personality. (Takes after his Dad there!) You never know when he’ll be found inverted on the floor, head and feet and hands on the floor, peering at you upside down between his legs. Or waddling cheekily around the house with a book hanging from his mouth, just to be silly.
He jabbers away constantly. I could have sworn he copied me and said “sticker” yesterday. He says “Dada” and “Uh-oh” for sure. Like yesterday he got the handkerchief and rod that Kaitlyn uses to clean out her flute and he pushed it through the crack in the floor by our front door, where it fell to the ground. Then he looked at me and said, “Uh-oh!”
He loves to be outside. In fact, he cries heartbrokenly when we make him come inside. If it was up to him, he’d be outside all day, getting dirty, eating rocks and exploring his world. I’m looking forward to being back in Ukarumpa in a little over a week, so I can let him outside without worrying that he’ll get into dog or chicken poop.
I’m so thankful for this busy, precious little guy of mine!
Happy First Birthday Elijah!
